Web Applications
A browser-based application is a program that runs on an internet browser, for example Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator or Mozilla Firefox. These can of course be used to view websites on the world wide web, but also information pages and resources more locally on intranets and database applications.
Software applications can be developed to run in a browser-based environment. These applications can run on a single server, but be available to an entire network (e.g. an intranet) or if you require your information and services to be available to a larger network of staff and clients, potentially anywhere in the world, they can be made available from the Internet.
Access to these systems, depending on your requirements, can be based on user rights and permissions. So you decide who has access to what information and administrative utilities.
Common uses of Web Applications include webmail (such as hotmail and yahoo), online retail sales (see image above), online auctions and discussion boards. Although web applications can be applied in many more situations.
Benefits of developing web enabled applications include:
- Websites and web applications are accessible from almost any computer with an internet connection making your information and services available to a larger network of staff and clients.
- Browsers are available on most operating systems installed on desktop PC's, reducing the need for software installation
- The layout of pages on the Internet has become a familiar format reducing training costs and providing easy to use interfaces for your staff and clients.
- Flexible graphics based user interfaces are easily adaptable to your corporate layout.
